Inside Arts was an Arts Council England funded ten week project conceived to work in HMYOI Deerbolt, a young offenders establishment with over 500 inmates aged 18-21 years serving long and short sentences, with an average stay of 16 weeks. HMYOI Deerbolt, is an all male young offenders institution is near Barnard Castle in County Durham. This project gave young men on the drug and alcohol recovery unit opportunity to explore Animation, Creative Writing and Music Creation/DJ skills, with the art forms combining in the production of the final DVD.
Our artists were:
Sheryl Jenkins: Animation
Tony Wright: Music creation / DJ skills
Sheree Mack/Chloe Daykin: Creative writing.
The project ran for 10 full-day sessions across 10 weeks during the winter of 2012/13, with the 3 artists working simultaneously in music-making, creative-writing and animation. In total 42 young male participants took part in the three artforms. The project culminated with the young men producing their own unique digital animations which were collated and produced into a project DVD for the participants, their peers, friends and family. Through the dissemination of the DVD, our project has reached new audiences for the arts, specifically from low arts participation and audience areas of our communities. In addition, through this project we have reached other prisoners and the participants’ peers.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the artists who took part in this project.
We also want to thank all the staff at HMYOI Deerbolt for their support and help in making this project a success. Throughout Dilly Arts’ time working in prisons we continue to learn and to be guided by your expertise. We look forward to working with you on future arts development programmes.
Dilly Arts remains committed to delivering high quality arts experiences in prisons and will continue to build upon this and our other projects into the future. We are currently devising a number of other projects in our North East prisons as well as working with the families and children of prisoners…. watch this space for news of our forthcoming projects just as soon as funding has been secured!
